Still Concussed

My last Medical Monday's post was back in August, and it was about the "little" crash I had at a local bike race.

I still have symptoms of an "acute concussion." I don't quite understand how it can be considered "acute" when it is over 2 months past the date of injury. But I'm not a doctor (yet). I can't ride a bike, or do any form of exercise, and school is more challenging than it should be. (Although, I think I did pretty well on my anatomy peripatetic today.) This is a really bad way to be starting off my final year of undergrad, with applications to finish, scholarships to apply for, 4.0s to maintain, a conference to plan and oh yeah, this thing called an Honour's Thesis.

Its going to be a long semester of headaches, concussion physio (I didn't even know that was a thing, and you think with this being my 6th concussion, somebody would have told me about this by now) and trips to the sport medicine clinic. I have a referral to "complex concussion physiatrist," I didn't even know that was a specialty. (Look all the things I am learning about medicine by having a concussion!!) The not exercising part is the worst because exercises is how I deal with pain, no exercise, worse pain, worse pain, worse grades. Apparently physiatrists have solutions for these kinds of dilemmas? I'm not sure if I will ever race a bike again...but I have other plans if I can't.

I hope you are all having a bettter Medical Monday than I am, one not filled with headaches and cadavers with pins in them and pages of anatomy questions. Now back to studying for the written portion of my anatomy exam which is on Wednesday (don't y'all just miss school??).

This is almost exactly what my concussion looked like (but with a helmet), conveniently thanks to Anatomy class I can identify all the structures in this diagram. Yipee!

  1. ahhh... I can almost smell the cadaver, and that's giving me a headache. Hoping you make a full recovery soon. Thanks for linking up with Medical Monday's.

  2. Mh... Post-Concussion Syndrome, maybe? Usually two months is a little long for "acute". I think. But that specialist referral will probably shine a light for you. Let us know how it goes, and feel better soon!

    1. That's what I said, but apparently I don't meet the criteria for Post Concussion Syndrome...just Concussion...This is what the concussion clinic people tell me

  3. So happy to see you back with us for Medical Monday! I was wondering what happened, but just chalked it up to busy studying. Wow! Seems like a chain of events which I hope you are able to get under control, so you can get back to some exercise! I hope you are better real soon!

  4. Stopping by from Medical Mondays! My husband is doing a sports medicine fellowship this year and always has to watch out for concussions at football games. I hope your recovery speeds along!

  5. Sorry you're still struggling with this. Having any sort of injury/illness while going through pre-med/med is challenging. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery.

    1. I have always technically had an illness while going through premed (and chances are, med school too) so its not a shocker. But concussion symptoms are rather hard to deal with...

  6. Keep trucking along! I just linked to the MM and saw your biking picture. My first triathlon was almost two weeks ago and was awesome. Have you done one before? There are some pretty sweet bikes out there (which often passed my borrowed one).

    1. As a cyclist, we don't cross over to triathlon, it is what we would consider blasphemy to the sport. So I guess that would be a no. I have considered it, but my ankle issues don't really promote running as a sport sadly!

  7. I had my first (and hopefully only) concussion this past summer and had to take almost a week off work and life and all that stuff. They suck and the symptoms are so distracting. Good luck with recuperating.
